Moving Guide: 5 Tips for Relocating When You Have Children

Moving to a new home, whether it is across town or in a brand new state, can be a tough transition for everyone in your family. Keeping these tips in mind prior to and during the move can help to make the transition as smooth as possible for everyone involved.

Relocation Tip #1: Hire a babysitter on moving day.

This might seem obvious, but not having the kids underfoot while you are trying to to load the moving truck can be a huge help. Consider having a friend or family member take the kids out for the day while you finish packing boxes and load the moving truck. You will already have more than enough things to worry about on moving day. It can be a huge relief to know that your kids are safe, happy, and well taken care of while you are dealing with all the stress of the move.

Relocation Tip #2: Keep an open line of communication.

Moving can be a hard transition for everyone in your family, particularly if it involves changing states or even school districts. Keeping your children in the loop throughout the process can help to ease the feelings of uncertainty that will inevitably accompany the move.

Relocation Tip #3: Keep your children involved when selecting a new home.

One way to keep your children involved is to show them photos of potential properties while you are searching for your new home. If possible, let older children come and tour the home with your. Ask them about their favorite parts of each home. They will likely pick up on your excitement and enthusiasm, helping them see the move as a fun new adventure rather than a scary change.

Relocation Tip #4: Let your children help you pack.

Another way to keep your children involved is by letting them help pack the boxes when the time comes. Letting them help pack up their bedroom can give older kids a sense of control which in turn can make them feel more confident about the move.

Relocation Tip #5: Cleaning out the clutter can be a family activity.

If you have lived in your current home for a long time, you have most likely accumulated a large amount of clutter. Let your kids help you decide what to keep, toss, give away, or sell. Unused toys or outgrown clothes are welcome donations at many shelters and charitable organizations. Keeping your kids involved in this process can help them see that their unused possessions could be well loved by someone else. As an added bonus, you will have less to pack, move, and store once you have eliminated the clutter.
