A city as vibrant and populous as Houston won’t run out of things to offer residents and visitors, especially on weekends. So update your June calendar for fun, engaging weekends you won’t soon forget:

1st weekend of June
Sat, June 4

  • The 6th Annual Caribbean American Heritage Month Festival puts the spotlight on the sound, flavors, and heritage of the Caribbean Americans. Expect vendor booths offering the stew pelau, classic jerk chicken, and the standard Caribbean breakfast of bake and saltfish. You can also get to sample mauby, a refreshing drink made from the bark of the tree of the same name. Check out the live performances of cultural groups and recording artists from the region.   • The Secret of the Hanging Egg: Salvador Dali is a rare opportunity to see firsthand the works of Salvador Dali. The centerpiece work is the artist’s 1932 painting “Eggs on the Plate without a Plate.” The show also features the work of fellow surrealists Victor Brauner, Max Ernst, and Rene Magritte, along with some 30 works by 12 other artists.   • Beautiful – The Carole King Musical (National Tour) chronicles the rise of Carole King as a songwriter and her breakthrough as one of the most successful performers in pop music history. The show is being staged at the Broadway at the Hobby Center. Tickets start at $55. For inquiries, call (800) 952-6520.
  • High Society: The Portraits of Franz X. Winterhalter features the works of 19th century portraitist Franz Xaver Winterhalter. A total of 45 paintings will be on view and many are on loan from the Windsor Castle. The exhibit runs at the Museum of Fine Arts Houston. For inquiries, call (713) 639-7300.

 

2nd weekend of June

Sat, June 11

  • Carnival Houston brings the carnivals of the Caribbean and Brazil, and the Mardi Gras of New Orleans to downtown Houston. This year, the festival features a fantasy costume ball, a paint party, and a street parade. Head to downtown at around 1 p.m.
  • 2016 Copa America Soccer Championship is the first time the prestigious tournament is being staged outside of South America. Aside from the US, teams from Colombia, Chile, Panama, Bolivia, and many others, will compete. The first game between Colombia and Costa Rica will begin at 9 p.m. at the NRG Stadium. Sun, June 12

  • Out of the Amazon: Life on the River is an exhibit of ceremonial objects, masks, costumes, and headdresses from 13 Amazonian tribes. A reconstructed hut from the Shuar people will also be part of the show at the Houston Museum of Natural Science, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tickets start at $20. For inquiries call (713) 639-4783.

3rd weekend of June

Sat, June 18

  • Houston Dynamo vs. DC United is set to thrill soccer fans at the BBVA Compass Stadium. Match begins at 7: 45 p.m. Admission starts at $28. For more inquiries, call (713) 276-GOAL.
  • Comicpalooza 2016 is the  most popular multi-format pop culture conference in the Southwest. This year, guests include Kate Beckinsale, Sigourney Weaver, AJ McLean of Backstreet Boys, and, many more. Expect more than 2,000 hours of programming covering comics, music, film, gaming and more. Sun, June 19

  • Big Fish is the stage adapation of the beloved novel and Tim Burton movie, which starred Ewan McGregor. It’s a story about the frayed relationship between a father and his son. Show will start at 3 p.m. at Stages Repertory Theater. Tickets start at $21.
  • Amber Secrets: Feathers from the Age of Dinosaurs features over 100 specimens of amber containing fossilized insects and plants from the mid-Cretaceous period. 4th weekend of June

Sat, June 25

  • Sculpted in Steel: Art Deco Automobiles and Motorcycles features 17 vintage cars and motorcycles known for their high style and timeless design. Housed at the Museum of the Fine Arts Houston, the exhibit can be viewed from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturdays. For more details visit the museum website.
  • Born Yesterday is a comedy about politics and the female persuasion. Suitable for general audiences, the play tells the story of a corrupt tycoon and an ex-showgirl determined to conquer Washington. It will be staged at the Alley Theater at 2 p.m. and 8:30 pm. Sun, June 26

  • Mythbusters: the Explosive Exhibition is an interactive exhibit based on Discovery Channel’s highly popular show. With hands-on displays that combine scientific fact with family-friendly features, this is an excellent way to spend the day with kids. Visit Space Center Houston for more information.
  • William N.Copley: The World According to CPLY is the first comprehensive retrospective devoted to the works of the American surrealist William N. Copley.
